Dear Friends,

My warm greetings to each of you!

The experiences I have had in recent times had left me feeling very down and repeatedly grappling for what I could hold on to. When the notice came that it was time for the Anthroposophic Prisoner Outreach Walk A Mile in My Shoes Walkathon, which I’ve participated in recent years, I felt that I couldn’t muster the energy to do it this year. The nearby forest fires had devastated beloved communities and natural places, along with bringing extremely hazardous smoke to our half of the state. Driving to a place where I could walk seemed undoable. Sadly, I took down my sponsor site.

Then two people died. Jim Gouveia and Ruth B Ginsberg. Both of these individuals had dedicated a good part of their lives to make my world and everyone’s world better, fairer, more reasonable and just. Each of them had put in lots of hard work. The great sadness I felt was turning me deeper into a downward place.

Jim’s wife, Chareane, had a request. In Jim’s honor, in lieu of food or flowers, she asked that we do some act or acts to make this world a better place and let her know what that was. Jim was someone, in the Corvallis community who had worked in many ways throughout his life serving others. This request seemed a fitting way to carry his work forward.

Then Ruth Ginsberg passed. And the intention fit doubly. To honor their legacies I had to do something. I needed to find ways to promote service to others, peace and justice on many levels: globally, nationally, within my community, within my family and within my self.

On Thursday night the rainclouds rolled in and with a mighty thunder roll the first rains in months fell. I woke Friday to clearer skies and breathable air. I could walk for the walkathon after all! Having walked over 6 miles on Friday and 12 miles today, I am confident I will be able to complete my goal of 25 miles this weekend by tomorrow night. I figure this counts toward the national category.

Now I am in the last minute position to find sponsors for this walk and cause.

If you feel moved please go to the APO site:

If you’d like me to personally collect your donation and send it in, let me know. I may or may not be able to put up a sponsor page. If you don’t see mine, just sponsor someone else. Thank you so much!

Be well, find a way and VOTE!                                                                                                  Kathy Reardon
