“In the past year we have received about 800 inquiries and responded with our introductory booklet Self Development in the Penitentiary along with a list of library books available, a lecture by Rudolf Steiner titled: Anthroposophy in Everyday Life, and a copy of the spiritual verse which begins…I bear my burdens to the setting sun - one inmate explained how he taped his verse to the top of his bunk to read each night” quote by Kathy Serafin, September 2024.
So many men and women leave our prisons angry, without new skills and without any belief in themselves that they can honestly succeed to achieve the American dream. APO’s mission is to change that belief and give them hope, courage and the belief that they can succeed!
I remember when I first began my studies in Anthroposophy with my wife, over 30 years ago. I had a business failure and lost confidence in myself. We read the Spiritual Science of Rudolf Steiner with others in a study group. It was through these continuing studies that Mary was confident she could begin a new career as a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. She began courses in Early Childhood Education and full filled her dream becoming a kindergarten teacher, first in her home school and then at the Waldorf School in Monterey, California, which she helped start. She supported us during a difficult time, and we continued our studies, THE SAME ONES OFFERED THROUGH APO (Anthroposophical Prison Outreach).
We both became more positive and came to understand the connection between inner development and living in the world. To this day I attribute much of our success to a new outlook and balanced attitude about life which I attribute to the ideas espoused in Steiner’s study of man (anthroposophy). I had to get over my anger and believe that I could succeed in life after my failure. This is the mission and the hope that APO is carrying forth to those incarcerated, helping them overcome their anger and giving them belief in themselves.
So, I’m asking you now if you, like myself, have been fortunate to find some measure of success and happiness in your life, then it’s time to “pass it forward.” I challenge you to make whatever donation you can to APO. Your gift is a lump sum payment (not per mile contribution). Please give what you are able! Donate by pressing that button to the right.

This Year’s Walk-a-thon is September 20 – 22, 2024
We hope you will join in to Walk, Run, or Cycle!
Anthroposophical Prison Outreach inspires inner change in men and women who are in prison. Our lending library, meditation instruction, correspondence course and twice yearly newsletters support students in their self-development. And, as you know, when one person changes, it radiates to those around them. Your donation makes a big difference in the world. Click the button above to join in as a walker gathering support or to make a general donation. You can also sponsor a specific walker, just scroll down to view our walkers/runners/cyclists! Thank you for your support!
Where will this walk-a-thon be held? It's everywhere! This is a nationwide event with no set course or distance. Walkers and cyclists can participate wherever they happen to be throughout the weekend. Each volunteer gathers in sponsors and in this way a broad group of individuals sustains APO. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000. This will support over 1,200 people across the US - individuals who are serving time in prison and have taken up a path of inner development through the work of the APO. Your support makes a real difference.
I would like to acknowledge the great work you guys are doing for prisoners who reach out for knowledge. I speak for all of us as a whole within the penal system when I say we are grateful. I’m a firm believer that what we achieve in this life will benefit us in the next life so I like to learn as much as I can. Anthony, Bruceton Mills, WV
Anthroposophy has opened a new reality for me. It transformed me. It has made me aware to what is real. It helped me understand spiritual evolution and showed me the value of each soul. Robert, Grafton, OH
